Unsolicited Marketing Calls to Cell Phones Are Illegal: With or Without a Cell Phone Directory

Unsolicited Marketing Calls to Cell Phones Are Illegal: With or Without a Cell Phone Directory

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Direct Marketing Association (The DMA) is warning consumers, legislators, and regulators about bogus e-mails that are causing anxiety about new proposed cell phone number directories. An urban myth has resurfaced in recent days claiming that proposed directories of cell phone numbers are being compiled for use by telemarketers.

Although there may be efforts to compile cell phone directories by phone companies, such directories may not be used for unsolicited telephone marketing calls, according to a 1991 federal law. The 1991 Telemarketing Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) makes it illegal for solicitation calls to be made to wireless phone numbers without clear permission from the individual to whom a number has been assigned.

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and its members continue to support vigorous enforcement of the absolute restriction on unsolicited calls to cell phone numbers for marketing purposes and urge federal and state authorities to prosecute those who may engage in this illegal activity. Moreover, The DMA continues to work aggressively with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to protect against cell phone solicitations by ensuring that marketers understand and comply fully with the law.

To help our members prevent even inadvertent unsolicited telemarketing calls to cell phones, the DMA offers the following:

-- The Wireless Block Identifier Service identifies for the marketing community those numbers that have been assigned as cell phone numbers -- numbers they may not call without express permission from the holder of a number.

-- The Wireless Ported Number File identifies land-based phone numbers that have been ported to cell phone numbers -- new numbers that also fall under the protections of the 1991 law.

The Direct Marketing Association (http://www.the-dma.org/) is the leading global trade association for businesses and nonprofit organizations that practice and support direct marketing. As more marketing increasingly becomes direct marketing and utilizes a growing number of media, The DMA facilitates the pioneering of new frontiers in the industry by providing cutting-edge research, education and networking, as well as advocacy and brand-building benefits. By promoting these advances and establishing industry standards, The DMA enables members to better reach consumers with more personal, relevant and desirable offers.

In 2004, direct marketing generated more than $2.3 trillion in U.S. sales, including $143.3 billion in catalog sales and $52.5 billion in Web-driven sales. Founded in 1917, The DMA today has more than 5,200 corporate, affiliate and chapter members from the US and 44 other nations, including 55 companies listed on the Fortune 100.

French Startup ALLEGRO Introduces H.264/MPEG-4 AVC First Compliance Test Suites at IBC (Hall 2 Stand 315)

Allegro Bitstreams Allow IC Vendors, OEMs and Broadcasters to Certify Their H.264/AVC Decoding Platforms Exhaustively

GRENOBLE, France, September 2/PRNewswire/ -- Allegro, the Digital Video Technology company focused on the
H.264/AVC standard, will introduce MPEG-4 AVC first certification tools at
the next IBC in Amsterdam.

The Allegro Test Suites are first class tools able to
guarantee an H.264 /AVC video decoder to be compliant with the H.264 /AVC
standard. Created by ALLEGRO using its own H.264 encoder, the Allegro test
package includes also several proprietary tools which help to reduce debug
time dramatically.

H.264/AVC is the innovating emerging compression video
standard, which brings a 50% bitrate saving compared to the well established
MPEG-2 video standard. Due to improved coding tools (enhanced motion
estimation, CABAC coding, loop filtering...), H.264/MPEG4-AVC real-time
decoding is much more complex to achieve than any other video compression
standard.

Allegro's Test suites cover all H.264 potential applications
(including tests for Baseline, Main, and High profiles) and all potential
video resolutions from Level 2 (CIF) to Level 4.1 (High definition).

All Test Suites hold Syntax, Stress and Error Concealment
tests which allow a complete validation of H.264 decoders. They can be
delivered in several system formats: NAL units, byte stream NAL, MPEG-2
Transport Stream (13818-1). Certification bitstreams are particularly
important to ensure first generation H.264 capable devices to be compatible
with today's and tomorrow's encoders.

"Our Compliance Test Suites enable faster time-to-market,
which is vital for the success of any commercial product. Risks and costs are
cut radically through a reliable sign-off test suite during production. Video
decoders tested by Allegro are guaranteed to be 100% compliant with new
H.264/AVC standard.. They are the first H.264 certification tools available
on the market," stated Pierre Marty, Allegro CEO.

Allegro Tests suites have already been acquired by more than 15 leading
companies of the digital video industry.

Prices range from 20 000 Euros to 100 000 Euros.

Allegro products can be seen at IBC 2005 Hall 2 stand 315.

Visteon Promotes Digital Radio Mondiale for Automotive Applications

Visteon Promotes Digital Radio Mondiale for Automotive Applications

KERPEN, Germany, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Through a collaborative project with the RTL Group, Europe's leading broadcasting and production company, Visteon Corporation (NYSE:VC) will demonstrate an in-vehicle Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) receiver at the IFA World of Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin, Sept. 2-7. The Visteon DRM, FM & AM CD-Tuner will be on display at the DRM Automotive Digital Radio booth (hall 5.2a - stand 102).

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001201/DEF008LOGO )

With support of the RTL Group, Visteon has contributed its audio and infotainment expertise to develop a modified radio receiver for DRM signal reception. The RTL Group is one of the key members of the Digital Radio Mondiale consortium.

The introduction of Digital Radio Mondiale will enable broadcasters to continue moving radio technology from analog to digital format, increasing sound and content quality. As a key benefit of DRM, consumers will be able to receive broadcasts in their homes and cars. DRM is designed to deliver a noise- and hiss-free sound quality, substantially improved over conventional analog radio. Most importantly for drivers, as already demonstrated in test drives, DRM can generally deliver excellent reception results in vehicles, even at high speeds.

"Digital Radio Mondiale is already aired in more than 30 countries with broadcast members from all six continents," said Gerhard Zeiler, RTL Group's chief executive officer. "Many broadcasters have committed to the DRM format including RTL Group stations."

Linda Rivers Bell, Visteon's electronics product strategy and planning director, points out that Visteon's infotainment and sound management capabilities are well established in the automotive industry, "We are prepared to deliver automotive grade DRM solutions, whenever the market is ready."

Visteon designs, tests and engineers sound systems for the automotive environment that accurately reproduce sound across all broadcast standards. Visteon is already supplying HD Radio/In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) modules and Satellite Radio Systems in North America, as well as Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) modules in Europe.

"As a strong supporter of new technologies, we consider DRM a complementary technology to the existing digital radio standards," says Bell.

The first DRM receivers will be available immediately following the IFA consumer show as tabletop radios able to receive DRM, DAB, FM and AM bands. Portable radios are expected to follow in 2006 and the market is expecting the first automotive solutions to follow thereafter.

About Digital Radio Mondiale

The DRM consortium formed in March 1998, when a small group of pioneering broadcasters and manufacturers joined forces to create a universal, digital system for the broadcasting bands below 30 MHz. DRM is the world's only, non- proprietary digital radio system for short-wave, AM/medium-wave and long-wave. DRM currently covers the broadcasting bands below 30 MHz, the DRM consortium voted in March 2005 to begin the process of extending the system to broadcasting bands up to 120 MHz. The design, development and testing phases are expected to be completed in the 2007-2009 time frame. The quality of DRM audio is considered excellent, and the improvement upon analog AM is immediately noticeable. Unlike digital systems that require a new frequency allocation, DRM uses existing AM broadcast frequency bands. DRM applications will include fixed and portable radios, car receivers, software receivers and PDAs. Broadcasters supporting DRM include Deutsche Welle and Sudwestrundfunk (SWR) in Germany, RTL Group stations, BBC World Service, Radio France and Voice of America, to name only a few. See http://www.drm.org/ for more information.

Digital SLR Cameras Reach Mainstream Consumers as Nikon Launches Cross Country Tour to Promote New D50 Camera

Nikon Kicks off the 'D50 Digital Experience' Multi-City Road Tour, Proving To Consumers That Incredible Photos are Incredibly Simple to Take with a D50

MELVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- This fall consumers in major cities across America will have the chance to see for themselves what the buzz surrounding digital SLR cameras is all about, as Nikon today embarks on a national multi-city road tour to put its newest, lightest and easiest-to-use digital SLR camera - the D50 - directly into the hands of curious consumers. Nikon's "D50 Digital Experience" tour kicks off today at the St. Louis County Fair and Air Show in St. Louis, Missouri, and will continue on to stops in 11 major cities across the country, helping people experience firsthand how easy taking incredible photos can be using the D50.

As part of the tour, a custom wrapped SUV and box-trailer convoy will make its appearance at popular local fairs and festivals within each of the 11 cities planned. At each stop, a six-member tour team will be equipped to offer attendees a complete experience of Nikon's hot new D50 digital SLR camera. Large photo displays and plasma screens will offer valuable tips and tutorials, while interactive displays will offer detailed product features and information. The tour will also feature a "mock photo shoot" studio along with the latest Epson(R) inkjet printers, so attendees can shoot pictures and print samples from the D50 on the spot. Attendees can ask available Nikon and Epson experts questions on digital SLR photography and printing techniques, and even borrow a D50 camera to "test drive" it to their fullest satisfaction.

Within each city, Nikon will also give away a brand new D50 digital SLR camera with an 18-55mm Zoom-Nikkor lens, valued at $799.95. By entering the camera giveaway on-site at each event, participants will also be automatically entered to win one national prize - a spectacular photo-trek for two to Sweden with American PHOTO(TM) magazine and world renowned photographers and Nikon mentors, Joe McNally and Reed Hoffman. This sweepstakes can also be entered online at http://www.nikondigital.com/D50experience/.

"At Nikon we're constantly amazed with the reaction we get from consumers who try one of our D50 digital SLR cameras. Its virtually instantaneous response time, superb intuitive design, and simple layout of controls, all lend to a very satisfying initial experience that allows most people to take great pictures within minutes of picking up the camera. In fact their admiration for the camera is often topped by their appreciation of the remarkable image quality they see in prints made directly from the camera," said Steve Heiner, general manager, Marketing, Digital SLR Camera Systems at Nikon Inc. "Energized by this reaction, Nikon is taking this remarkable camera on the road with the D50 Digital Experience tour allowing thousands of people to try the camera and witness how quickly and easily they can take incredible photos with little or no effort," he added.

Digital SLR cameras have grown rapidly in popularity over the last several months and Nikon's recent introduction of the 6.1 megapixel D50 further spurred excitement and interest among a broad range of consumers including family memory-keepers as well as photo enthusiasts. The D50 Digital Experience tour will be an excellent resource for consumers to get a hands-on experience with the camera and judge its advantages for themselves.

Atmel and LG Electronics, Inc. Collaborate on a DMB Extension for LG's New Laptop Family

Atmel and LG Electronics, Inc. Collaborate on a DMB Extension for LG's New Laptop Family

HEILBRONN, Germany and SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 2
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, and LG International Co., Ltd. announced today a new family of laptop computers with DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcast), based on Atmel's ATR2740 DAB baseband processor. The LG LW40 Express is equipped with Atmel's latest DAB baseband processor, and is the world's first DMB notebook PC. This model features a 14- inch wide LCD screen with a WXGA resolution of 1280x768 and a ratio of 15:9, targetted towards the DVD market. The fine bright LCD installed in this model shows deep and clear images, appealing to consumers who seek enhanced entertainment features.

Also, the DMB notebook PC features functions such as DMB watching and recording, channel registration, broadcast-reception sense indication, and channel scanning, as well as booked recording, picture capture, and intelligent update (automatically downloading software from the Internet and upgrading itself), thus enhancing the user's experience.

"We selected Atmel's solution due to the impressive performance and flexibility, especially the USB interface was a very useful feature to us," said Mr. K.H. Kim from the PC Marketing Team of LG. "The co-work between Atmel and LG was enjoyable and very satisfying to us."

"We are very proud that LG selected our new baseband processor to realize this fantastic application," said Carsten Friedrich, Atmel's Cellular Marketing Manager. "We hope that this will be one of the successes of LG on the new and upcoming DMB market in Korea."

The DMB feature is realized with the help of Atmel's ATR2740 baseband processor, which provides a high level of flexibility and performance. This baseband processor is controlled by a standard ARM(R) core, making it easy to create customized software due to the controller being very well known with designers. The ATR2740 offers high processing power to enable the part to decode the full DAB data rate of 1.8 Mbit, powerful enough to run any DMB service, and still have plenty of free processing power available on the ARM controller for customer software. This makes it easy to implement this device in complex environments, enabling a fast time to market.

The wide flexibility offered by the ATR2740 is given from the large variety of interfaces which can be supported. UART, USB, and SPI are available for control functions, and SSO, SFCO and RDI interfaces, as well as two audio outputs, either I2S or SPDIF, are implemented data interfaces.

Due to the high integration of the device, the external component count is as low as only two external parts (a simple crystal and an 8-MB Flash are required) plus a tuner solution to run the full DAB function. To run DMB, the video and audio processing must be added; in the case of the LG LW40, it is done on the laptop.

In particular, the DMB-enabled notebook PC utilizes DMB antenna and signal treatment modules that can be replaced with an optical disc drive (ODD) in the notebook PC. This allows users to opt between the DMB module and the ODD, increasing mobility.

As for consumers' preference for DMB receivers, notebook PCs rank second after mobile phones, and with the development of DMB, the DMB notebook market will likely grow.

The UHAPI Forum Highlights Programming Solution and Open Source Implementation at IFA

The UHAPI Forum Highlights Programming Solution and Open Source Implementation at IFA

Technical Presentations and On-site Demo Show the UHAPI Enabling Faster A/V Software Development

IFA-BERLIN, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Universal Home Application Programming Interface (UHAPI) Forum today introduced to Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) attendees its specification for reducing the software development cost and complexity of audio/video (A/V) technology.

The software effort in consumer electronics (CE) devices keeps growing rapidly, which results in increased development cost and increased lead times. The UHAPI eliminates the repetitive coding of standard, commonly used functions for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard and Personal Video Recording to speed up product development. As a result, UHAPI allows the semiconductor and CE vendor to concentrate on differentiating features.

The need for UHAPI is apparent; industry support of the UHAPI is quickly growing with Forum membership doubling in less than eight months. Within the past year, the Forum released the UHAPI 1.0 specification defining the hardware-independent software interfaces necessary to configure and control video-related functions.

The growing popularity of UHAPI gave rise to an open source implementation of UHAPI on a personal computer. This project was launched in June on Sourceforge under the project name UHAPI4Linux. The UHAPI Forum welcomes this initiative as it further accelerates the adoption of UHAPI.

Presence at IFA

The UHAPI Forum will be exhibiting at IFA's Technisch-Wissenschaftliche Forum (TWF) in Hall/Stand Number 05.3/11.

IFA attendees can observe an in-booth, Linux-based demonstration by LogicaCMG that incorporates UHAPI4Linux. The demo clearly illustrates the use of UHAPI and cost-savings associated with a UHAPI implementation.

On September 5, UHAPI Forum members will deliver two presentations during IFA's TWF lecture series:

11:30AM - 12:00PM CEST
"Reducing the Cost of Software Development via UHAPI"
Speaker: Jeroen Brouwer, Philips Semiconductors

12:00PM - 12:30 PM CEST
"UHAPI Technology Overview"
Speaker: John Vugts, Philips Semiconductors

Continued Industry Support

The UHAPI Forum's analog and digital ATSC television specification is available online to all industry representatives, including non-members. The Forum will augment the current specification this year with hard disk drive (HDD) recording and DVB support. Further enabling adoption of the UHAPI, training on UHAPI implementation techniques is available through BORES Signal Processing. More information about the organization, the specification and training is available at www.uhapi.org.

About The UHAPI Forum

Founded in November 2004, the UHAPI Forum develops and maintains the Universal Home Application Programming Interface (UHAPI) for the home CE industry. The UHAPI serves as a hardware-independent bridge between the CE and middleware or application software industries and the semiconductor industry. The technology enables middleware and application software to be easily ported across multiple devices. Deployment of the UHAPI also frees software developers to focus solely on application development, which reduces development costs and speeds a product's time-to-market. Current UHAPI Forum members include ACCESS Co., Ltd., Atos Origin, BORES Signal Processing, the Digital TV Industry Alliance of China, HP, Mediabolic, NVIDIA, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. For more information about the UHAPI Forum or to become a member, visit www.uhapi.org.

(NASDAQ:SRSL), one of the world's leading providers of audio technology solutions, announced today that Radio Television Hong Kong, ("RTHK"), one of three primary government-owned radio stations in Hong Kong, selected SRS Circle Surround(R) 5.1 ("CS") as their surround sound technology for a four-week long radio program called "The Beginning Of Time." The program was designed to target teens during the summer holiday season as part of their "Solar Project" to motivate young people to attend concerts and music events. The star-studded Sci-Fi drama, which features some of Hong Kong's leading artists including Andy Lau and Gigi Leung, was produced in surround sound with lots of surround audio effects. SRS Circle Surround was employed by RTHK as the surround sound encoding technology to enable the delivery and preservation of these 5.1 surround sound effects over RTHK's two-channel stereo broadcasting system. The "The Beginning Of Time" program which began airing earlier this month in Hong Kong is currently available to download at RTHK's official website, http://www.rthk.org.hk/rthk/radio2/myheart/20050801.html.

SRS Circle Surround is an advanced encode/decode system that allows professional audio engineers, such as Dimension-S Music Productions, who produced this program, to encode up to 6.1 channels of discrete audio for distribution or broadcast over existing two-channel carriers such as standard-definition and high-definition television, analog and digital radio, streaming media, CDs and VHS tapes. Since CS encoding is backward compatible with all playback systems, including mono and stereo formats, RTHK listeners who have a Circle Surround or other matrix surround decoder installed, will hear a stunning 5.1 surround sound experience, while those listening over regular two-speaker stereo systems will hear the broadcast in enhanced stereo.

Henry Lai of Dimension-S Music Productions, SRS Labs' partner in Hong Kong, is the surround sound encoding consultant for this event. He is working closely with RTHK and Cyberport Digital Media Center on the production of the program. For the Solar Project closing concert held on August 28, Lai provided real-time surround encoding of the concert, which was broadcasted live. Lai said, "Circle Surround is the only system that provides satisfactory live surround encoding results that can be broadcast over any media. The audio quality is superb and the system is very user-friendly, so along with its versatility, Circle Surround is the top choice for any broadcast facility."

"As a public broadcaster, we chose to encode our surround sound format in Circle Surround as a unique way enhance the quality and range of our broadcasting services," said David Ho, Deputy Head of RTHK Radio 2.

SRS Labs' director of business development for Hong Kong, Ricky Wong, says, "We are delighted that RTHK chose to use our Circle Surround technology. RTHK is clearly a leader in delivering the best broadcasting experiences to their listeners, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on these exciting surround broadcasts for Asian Pacific and online radio broadcasts."

Circle Surround is quickly becoming a broadcast standard for multichannel surround sound delivered over the standard two-channel radio and television broadcasting systems used in overseas markets. To date, over 500 million television viewers have experienced Circle Surround, and over 300,000 DVDs and CDs have been distributed that include CS. Key users include Guangdong Pearl Radio Station in the People's Republic of China, Yokohama FM and Tokyo FM radio in Japan and television broadcasters Mainichi Broadcasting System Inc, (MBS) and GAORA in Japan, as well as MTV, VH1, ESPN, ABC and others in North America. RTHK joins this list of surround broadcasters and gains a competitive advantage in their marketplace by being able to offer surround sound to their listeners.

Radio stations that use CS can broadcast one CS-encoded radio signal that satisfies all possible audience playback environments, because it is backward compatible to all mono and stereo formats. However, for the ultimate experience in surround sound playback, it is recommended that audio enthusiasts use a surround sound receiver that includes Circle Surround II decoding, available from A/V receiver manufacturers such as Marantz, Accuphase, Pioneer, Theta Digital, Motorola, Yamaha and Kenwood, and from car receiver makers including Eclipse, Panasonic, Kenwood, and Fujitsu Ten.

Charlotte-based Elevator Channel Braces for Rapid Expansion as a Result of New Partnership with Global Signage Provider Digital View

Charlotte-based Elevator Channel Braces for Rapid Expansion as a Result of New Partnership with Global Signage Provider Digital View

Outsourcing partnership expected to generate growth throughout several major U.S. markets

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Elevator Channel, a unique advertising, news, information and entertainment network, announced today that it will partner with global digital signage provider Digital View to outsource the manufacturing and technical support of its flat-panel, high-resolution digital display systems found in elevators throughout Charlotte, N.C.

Since its inception in 2001, the Elevator Channel has been managing its elevator-based network of display screens, associated hardware, software and hosting services in-house. Outsourcing these technological aspects of the company's business to Digital View allows the Elevator Channel to save thousands of dollars on overhead expenses, respond to growth opportunities faster and focus on building its brand through its core competencies: advertising sales, media creation and real estate acquisition.

Digital View, one of the world's leading providers of digital signage and complete digital media networks, will be the primary provider of display units, supplying the Elevator Channel with LCD flat-panel screens, solid-state media players and Web-based media scheduling software called Remote Transfer(TM). Digital View will also provide hosting and help desk services to the Elevator Channel.

With the advent of this partnership, the Elevator Channel is currently in the process of retrofitting all of its current locations in Charlotte. In September, the company will also begin to install its enhanced network and equipment in approximately 100 additional elevators in Charlotte, including Gateway Center, Wachovia Two and Three, SouthPark and Interstate Tower.

"This is an exciting and pivotal point in the company's history," said Elevator Channel Chief Executive Officer Rudy Alexander. "Our recent expansion efforts demonstrate just how beneficial the company's new partnership with Digital View will be for our profitability and growth. Now we're positioned as a pure media company and equipped for rapid expansion."

According to Alexander, additional real estate acquisition is currently underway in Charlotte as well as other major cities in the southeast and southwest.

"The Elevator Channel is a very impressive company that is executing against a business model which brings tremendous value to their advertisers, building owners and viewers, and we're delighted at the opportunity to be working in partnership with them," said Stuart Armstrong, COO North America for Digital View, which is based in London, and has offices in New York, Toronto, Silicon Valley and Hong Kong. "We are thrilled that our solid-state remote media players, combined with our Web-based remote transfer media controls, are giving the Elevator Channel a much more cost-effective and reliable system, particularly for a challenging environment like elevators."

Alexander adds that acquiring real estate and deploying the company's network is a much smoother process financially for the Elevator Channel now that Digital View is on board. The new partnership will reduce the Elevator Channel's installation expenses by approximately 85 percent.
